Offered in 0 more formats"Diary of Samuel Slack, Jr.: Samuel Slack Jr. was born of Anglo-American forebears, in the Charleston Lake area of Leeds County, Ontario on August 17, 1827. A farmer, carpenter, surveyor, traveler, poet and Philanthropist. His grandfather, Joseph (1760) first settled there after the American Revolution on land given him by the Crown, having come from Albany County, New York as a United Empire Loyalist. Samuel Slack Jr. and Louisa Reed were married August 17, 1846 at Morristown, New York and came to the United States in 1849, settling at String Prairie, Lee County, Iowa. In 1852 they moved to Decator County, Iowa where most of their family was born. In 1873, April 3rd, they arrived in Kansas and homesteaded a farm in Troy Township, Reno County. After a move to Barber County they settled in Hutchinson, Kansas, 112 West 4th Street, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Twelve children were born to this union and nine were raised to adulthood with 44 grandchildren."--Caption title page.
