In re-envisioning Lost in Space, the producers make some interesting choices . Most obvious is the origin of "robot" (that's its name), and that there are both good and evil versions. The other main one is casting Dr. Smith as a woman (Parker Posey). This Zachary Smith is more than just conniving and used for comic relief, but truly malevolent. The creators also start with the Robinsons as a broken family, perhaps on the road to recovery, but more in keeping with current times family dynamics. More drama and heightened special effects would be expected, but at its heart it's still a family drama, and with a few bumps, achieves this.
