Seventh in the Darling Dahlias series, and perhaps the last, according to the author. These sweet stories take place in Darling, Alabama during the Great Depression, and the Dahlias are members of the local garden club. Self sufficiency is terribly important and finds the Dalias planting many back garden crops to use and share. Pie Suppers boast their funds, and the recipe for many delightful entries like Shoofly, Green Tomato, Pecan, and Lemon Icebox are included. Meanwhile, the local barbershop quartet, the Lucky Clovers are finalists this year's contest, shoo-ins to win, until the unfortunate demise of one of them. The local switchboard needs revisions, but the miserly silent partner who co-owns the exchange refuses to fund any improvements. Since the repeal of Prohibition moonshiners are barely getting by, and on top of everything else, Liz Lacy's former suitor, the unfortunate Grady, is mooning around her doorstep again. An interesting peek at the times and expectations of those days.
