A multi-volume chronological history of the Civil War that focuses on the military campaigns. All significant battles of the war--from Antietam to the smaller but crucial encounter at Mobile Bay--are described in detail. The set contains approximately 100 articles written by 40 authors, as well as hundreds of extensive quotations and full text from original source material including letters, autobiographies, and court records. The set is arranged chronologically for volumes one through five; volume six contains biographies of the major leaders of the war as well as a selected reading list and comprehensive index. A variety of illustrated material accompanies the text. For a wide, general audience: those who love Civil War history but can do without the scholarly apparatus of academia.
