Critics didn’t like this movie because its parts don’t always fit together smoothly. Light comedy can be interrupted by harsh violence, for example. However, my feeling is that all the parts are good even if the transitions can be abrupt, so I stayed with the movie through its jumps in tone and enjoyed the whole thing. It’s also true that these characters are not nice people and really shouldn’t prosper, but I found that the splendid cast made the characters so appealing that I forgot about their failings and rooted for them anyway. Of course you expect fine performances from Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones, so the surprise was the two younger actors who played the son and daughter and kept right up with the old pros. So The Family certainly isn’t a perfect movie, but I enjoyed more than anything else I’ve seen recently.

Entertaining. Has a sex scene, and lots of violence and cussing.

Rated 4/10. Attempting to mix comedy along with serious gangster action, doesn't work well, in my opinion. Hence, the lower rating.

I think this movie would have much better if it had been a straight-forward comedy. There's some good talent in it, and the plot could have been hilarious.

As it was, one moment you had a funny bit, and in the next, somebody gets killed.

seeing below 'trannyclone's' remark I am moved to comment, why unleash that potent opinion (and so on the mark) on this film?....why, of all targets available to you, do you choose this one? I enjoyed all the acting of the family, I liked that the school bullies got their comeuppance. but it seemed that deniro's character had to kill every townsman he encountered, for the exigency of the plot. saw an interview with Pfeiffer where she said she had been in movies with deniro before, but had never had the pleasure to act in the same scene with him. so I looked especially closely at those scenes in this flick. and I conclude that ms. pffeifer is vastly underrated. Deniro, of course, makes his acting look easy. I bet he could give courses entitled THE ZEN OF ACTING, or somesuch. Similarly, the young woman and young man who play siblings, you should keep an eye on. They're really good. I've seen better looking French villages, though, and Tommy Lee has had much better roles to play.

Funny, violent, slightly ridiculous and good entertainment. Robert De Niro's acting is wonderful. The rest of the family follows in the father's footsteps.

“The Family” is predictable and ultimately, not very interesting. Perhaps it needed to include more of the family’s background, their lives prior to entering the witness protection program. Also, there’s no clear protagonist; each member vies for the position at one point or another.

Besson, Scorsese, De Niro, Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones, all in a thoroughly enjoyable dark comedy.

You need to treat this as a dark comedy and then it’s not so bad. The scene with Goodfellas is brilliant!! Overall an OK movie, worth the watch.

Comfortable mob based family comedy. DeNiro is great as usual and their is a real funny reference to his earlier movie work that I think you might like.

If we have a family at all based on love or lust, this is an example of how our elite slave masters would brainwash them to be.That's the real purpose of why they allowed this film to be made and released,BUT YOU DON'T HEAR ME THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fred, dad: This morning I was worth 20 million dollars. I'm probably worth double that now. I cheated death so many times in my life, I don't even think about it any more. It's like getting caught outside in a storm. You just have to avoid being hit by the lightening.

FBI agent : If I find out that you had anything even remotely to do with this, you're going to go away for a hell of a long time.
Fred: Clam down, I was with *you* all night.
FBI agent: That's the problem, your alibi is too good.
