New York Times bestselling author Karen Hawkins crafts an unforgettable story about a sleepy Southern town, two fiercely independent women, and a truly magical friendship.
Sarah Dove is no ordinary bookworm. To her, books have always been more than just objects: they live, they breathe, and sometimes they even speak. When Sarah grows up to become the librarian in her quaint Southern town of Dove Pond, her gift helps place every book in the hands of the perfect reader. Recently, however, the books have been whispering about something out of the ordinary: the arrival of a displaced city girl named Grace Wheeler.

If the books are right, Grace could be the savior that Dove Pond desperately needs. The problem is, Grace wants little to do with the town or its quirky residents—Sarah chief among them. It takes a bit of urging, and the help of an especially wise book, but Grace ultimately embraces the challenge to rescue her charmed new community. In her quest, she discovers the tantalizing promise of new love, the deep strength that comes from having a true friend, and the power of finding just the right book.

"A mesmerizing fusion of the mystical and the everyday" (Susan Andersen, New York Times bestselling author), The Book Charmer is a heartwarming story about the magic of books that feels more than a little magical itself. Prepare to fall under its spell.

Books! A library! Books! A magical Southern small town! BOOKS!
I loved reading 'The Book Charmer'!

'The Book Charmer' is not syrup, Southern drawl or platitudes. It is one family and all the families who love their town through generations and the town that loves, holds and treasures all its families through their foibles, their difficult times, their happiness and their sadness.

What I would give to live in a town like that.

A few profound lines stuck out for me. This one in particular grabbed a piece of my heart:

"Truth was a funny thing. On its surface, it was all good, a measure of a person's character. But under certain circumstances, truth was a burden you spared someone else. A weight you carried for them so they could continue on, free from the pain of reality."
*
"It's odd - when you look back, things seem simpler, but they weren't.". . ."When it's a memory, you already know the outcome, so we believe it was an easier time. Looking forward is much more uncertain, and so feels complicated."
*
"It's funny, but we only know the people in our lives in relation to who they are to us - a father or a mother or a brother. We never see them the way others do."
*
5 stars for 'The Book Charmer' with hopes we return to Dove Pond very soon.

This was was of the best books I've read all year, and I've read a lot of good books this year! It is magical, poignant, and heart warming, all at the same time. It was so good that I simply didn't want it to end! I've never read anything by this author before as she mainly writes Regency romances, which don't interest me in the least, but I'll be on the lookout for anything new that she writes in this style. It was absolutely excellent!!!

If a book were to speak to you -- which one would it be? What would its message be? In this new novel, Sarah hears books speaking to her. They choose their next reader and can be quite stubborn. This touch of magic realism enhances the narrative in this sweetly Southern small-town story. I was charmed by both Sarah Dove and Grace Wheeler in this new novel. Will the Dove Pond Social Committee be able to revive the town and save it from extinction? I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!
