In an unexpected outcome, incumbent President Harry S. Truman defeated New York governor Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential election. Truman, who had become president after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, won 49.6 percent of the vote, despite losing four southern states to States' Rights Party candidate Strom Thurmond.
