"Something strange happened on an unremarkable day just before the season changed. beautiful book that describes the impact of COVID-19 on communities and why some essential workers could not quarantine. Everybody who was outside . . . went inside. Outside, it was quieter, wilder, and different. Inside, we laughed, we cried, and we grew. We remembered to protect the ones we love and love the ones who protect us. While the world changed outside, we became stronger on the inside and believed that someday soon spring would come again."--Provided by publisher.

Indeed very emotional, true, the drawings are beautiful. My 2 yo loved exploring every page and seeing things she knows or experience.

I'd heard a lot about this book from a conference I attended and had to pick it up for myself. It's as heartfelt and moving as everyone says it is, and there is in fact one page that almost made me cry.

This was a lovingly put together story about what happened when the world went into lockdown, except the medical workers, firemen, police and other essential workers. There are a couple of pieces in the drawings that really brought the emotions out. A nurse looking at an empty hospital bed, a couple hugging and looking at a picture of a family member, the implication of both that there had been someone who had died. But it is a hopeful story, beautifully illustrated.

LeUyen Pham's spare prose and evocative, colourful illustrations capture the big emotions of living through the Covid-19 pandemic, without ever directly naming it. Each illustration has little details that say so much about how people were feeling. The characters are inspired by real people - those of us who stayed inside and those who couldn't (healthcare and essential workers) creating a sort of time capsule of emotions and moments of the past year. Very well done and a wonderful book to start conversation.

I was drawn to the cover of this book -there is a little girl in pigtails with a cat sitting beside her, both are looking out the window (which has hearts hung in it). There is so much to this picture book. It is the story of the pandemic. It is a glimpse into our lives as every day people. It celebrates the work of essential workers.

I think one of the absolute best picture book offerings I have seen about the pandemic. I love Pham's art, and the simple words are absolutely full of meaning. A comforting, beautiful story for kids looking for meaning and affirmation in these strange times.

Powerful, beautifully drawn, and an emotional telling of our global experience in the COVID-19 pandemic.
