From New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in the beloved Regency-set world of her charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix.

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince--while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable...but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society--just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend's sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm--at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London's elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

My original read gave this three stars, but a reread boosted it up to four because of the plot and the funny banter. There is one particular scene that is problematic, but it also adds a real sense of realism and desperation for a woman's situation that feels accurate with the time period. And this is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2020, can't wait!

Sexy, dreamy, and funny. Can't get better than that.

I had pretty high expectations going into this one and it's been on my tbr for years. Knowing the Netflix series is in production hastened my desire to finally get to it and it's sequels. Although I really enjoyed the writing, wittiness, and family interactions, there was a decision by the author in the latter part of the story that threw me for a loop. I just have a hard time understanding why it happened that way or why there wasn't some groveling later. For some readers, there will be no getting past the actions by the heroine. While it ruined her credibility, it didn't ruin the entire story for me. I just wish it either didn't happen at all or that she showed true remorse for her actions. If I overlook that one event, the story is a fun and near perfect HR for me. Instead, I'm taking away a full star for that scene alone. I'm not letting it taint the rest of the series and I'm looking forward to continuing on.

Read in anticipation of the Netflix adaptation, and I think the Bridgertons are going to make for a great show. I love both the main pairing and the bustling, in-each-other's-business Bridgerton family. Even stereotypically marriage-minded mama Violet has genuine moments where readers get glimpses of her as her own well-developed person. The one thing I didn't like was a drunken scene of dubious consent between married characters, which left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

The Bridgertons are coming to Netflix! Julie Andrews voicing Lady Whistledown! I want to celebrate this news, but I also don't want to be horribly disappointed. What to do while you wait? Pick up this new 2019 edition of The Bridgertons #1. In addition to the original story of Daphne and Simon's courtship, this edition includes the 2nd Epilogue and insight from the author.

This was a wonderful story, could not put it down and read it from start to finish in one day. Loved the characters, the humour and as this was the first Bridgerton story realized what a great start it was to this series. Have not yet read all the books but this was the very best.

"The Duke and I," was my first foray into true romance novels, my only other experience being the "Outlander," series (which I have not yet finished). A friend of mine recommended starting with Ms. Quinn and specifically with the Bridgerton series, and I'm very glad she did! I enjoyed this book quite a bit, finding it enjoyable and easy escapism of just the sort I was looking for. I would absolutely and without hesitation recommend this book as an excellent starting point for other romance-newbies!

The characters are interesting and well drawn, and the chemistry is between the lead characters doesn't feel forced, false, or overly abrupt. There are some cliches indulged in, and fairly early, but this seems to be part of the appeal of the concept. I enjoyed that Ms. Quinn writes from the perspective of both her leading characters, often alternating between their viewpoints within the same scene in a way that never feels jarring. I expected to spend most of my time reading either the damsel's perspective or that of the rakish suitor, and instead found myself with a rounded vision of each scene, including the bedroom scene.

Some of the language is a bit repetitive, but the dynamics among characters feels fresh and honest. I especially joy the relationships among the Brridgerton family, who are a large, happy, loving, close knit group. There's no angst on the family front for this ingenue, which is incredibly pleasant.

It was going strong for the first 2/3 and then it hit a wall that had to do with a drunken night and I was not a fan of how that turned out. I think this slightly turned me off to the rest of the book and everything else just seemed to wrap up way too nicely. But I love family series and I am really looking forward to the next books in the series.

The Bridgertons is a great regency romance series about the warm and funny family of eight.
