Sheer talent.

This quiet album deserves a serious listen which is easy to do in a pandemic. Make yourself comfortable, headphones on, CD booklet open at song #1, press PLAY, follow the words. Enjoy. Well worth the effort. Interesting stories. Lots of pretty poetry and original creative imagery. Nice.

The only reason I didn't give "Folklore" 5 stars is Taylor Swift's lazy choice of words like "s**t", "f**k you" and "go f**k myself" respectively in three different songs. Lazy. I understand what Taylor Swift is saying, but I don't want to sing those words. Ever. I don't want to hear a 12 year old sing them either. She's a better writer than that. Lazy.

In 1977 James Taylor wrote a song called "If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight." I was young then and everybody who was anybody was saying "man" and swearing. But it's also true that many people weren't (and not for religious reasons). I love JT's songs and I love singing his songs out loud and in my head. When I heard this song's subtle line -- "...her goodbyes were somewhat unrefined..." -- I laughed. I've enjoyed wondering over the years all the unrefined ways the girl in that song said goodbye. JT the poet. "Unrefined" -- a word that plays to your imagination. Pure poetry. Not lazy.

I finally took a step away from The Chicks and have given Folklore a true chance. I am for sure a ballad girl, which makes this album perfect for me. But I did find more songs than usual that I just skip while listening. I think she offers wonderful storytelling, which I live for. Also, yes, I have dove into all the conspiracies about what all the songs mean and how they are connected, so let me know if you’ve got theories. I think I listen to Betty at least 5 times a day, it just reminds me so much of her early stuff, and I love it. Other stand outs for me are Exile (that man’s voice KILLS me), The 1 (#relatable), Illicit Affairs (for the anger), and Invisible String (just makes me happy). Overall, I have enjoyed it a lot, I have yet to figure out where it lies in my line up of her albums, so I’ll get back to you on that!

Folklore being out of Taylor's usual genre music zone she managed to put together a beautiful, amazing album! She truly outdid herself and outdid many artist's who've been in this alternative-pop/folk-type genre for years. Definitely give it a listen. It's her second album out as a solo artist without a label. Jack Antonoff is an incredible musician, producer and lyricist who assisted and played a big role in making this album truly amazing.
