Beautiful, slow-burning film, with stellar performances from the small cast. Each shot is obviously painstakingly constructed, & the sound work--though often jarring--is fabulous. For me, director Max Eggers has officially joined the likes of Ari Aster, the Fiala/Franz pairing, Alex Garland, André Øvredal, & Jordan Peele as must-watch filmmakers of modern horror.

It looks like previous ratings for The Lighthouse are all over the place. I really enjoyed it, but I think you have to be ready to just let it unfold. It has a dark, brooding, unsettling mood throughout, there's very little dialogue, and what dialogue there is, is in a strong dialect that some people may have trouble following. I thought the acting was fantastic and very believable. There are a few other trippy psychological thrillers like this that I also love, but I don't want to name them here and accidentally give any spoilers.

Right now the storm of Covid19 is raging--my beloved library shuttered, and I am as stir crazy as a wickie on an island....so I rented this gem at Redbox. Egger's impressed me with "the Witch" and this film did not disappoint! Defoe and Pattison really crushed this one and the cine was masterful. Might be a little dark for the kiddies.

This is one of those critics' or film-student films. Good acting (especially Dafoe) and sometimes great visuals, but overall deadly slow and boring. You keep waiting for something specific to happen to reward your patience, but alas, it never does. We did not find it at all suspenseful and there was no surprise ending or anything. This (writer?)/director also did the nearly as boring and unsatisfying "The Witch".

Nope! I didn't get it? It looked to me like two dudes that slowly go insane and wind-up at each-other's throats. Defoe (whose grand pappy authored Robinson Crusoe (fun fact)) did a pretty good job I guess.

Two stars. One for atmospherics and another for performances, especially Willem Dafoe.

This is as "two-hander". That's the term for a drama with just two characters and, usually, interacting in a limited or confined setting. This movie qualifies.

It also qualifies as one of the most unpleasant movies I've ever seen. Unpleasantness...without a purpose, a moral, or satisfying and unexpected ending. It's called a horror movie, but there's nothing to horrifying here. Gruesome? Certainly. Morbidly fascinating? Possibly, if you can stomach the gruesomeness.

Subtitle: How To Go Mad in Six Weeks.

Be forewarned.

2 hours I will never get back! 1/2 a star for satisfying the curiosity of what a mermaids sexual parts may look like. WASTE OF TIME!

I wasn't crazy about the movie.
Then I watched the specials attached where the talked about the making of the movie. Then I was intrigued.
The lenses and filters were from the 1930s and were designed to remove the color red to give their skin a very weathered look.
The movie was well researched and the entire lighthouse was built for the movie.
You have to see this it was made first then watch the movie to really appreciate it.
