When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Kohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready. Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend's marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan. But when she wakes up, she's suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date. It's the same night--December 15--but 2025, five years in the future. After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020. She can't shake what has happened. It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn't the kind of person who believes in visions. That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella. Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind. That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision.

A few laughs, a few tears. This is a love story of sorts and a story about friendship. A very touching book which I enjoyed very much.

Type A Dannie and Type B Bella have been best friends for most of their life. In 5 years is their friendship love story. A quick-paced read, this story will charm you and rip open your heart at the same time.

This book was not as I expected. A quick read, and engaging enough to keep reading, but something just didn't sit right with me. It was not a love story; it was about friendship. The dream really had no impact on the plot at all, and actually took away from the story because I kept wondering how the love triangle would develop. I also didn't find it feasible that a super busy, highly motivated corporate lawyer would still have so much time and energy dedicated to her childhood bff; she acted more like a teenager than a 30 something (imo).

At some point, we are all asked where we see ourselves in five years. When Dannie has a particularly vivid dream/vision on the night she gets engaged, her five-years-in-the-future life is completely different than what she expects .. different apartment, different boyfriend. The story flash-forwards to 4-1/2 years later, when she's introduced to this mystery man as the new boyfriend of her best friend Bella. The beautiful friendship between Dannie and Bella is at the heart of this book, which is much more than a light, fluffy read.

Rebecca Serle’s In Five Years was, while in the moment of reading, engaging, is an unmemorable book. The main character, Dannie is certain about the way her life will turn out down to the very meticulous second. She’s about to get engaged and get her dream job at a corporate law firm, all while living life alongside her best friend, Bella. One night, she wakes up in a future five years away, with a different man and different apartment, wondering where her life went astray from what she thought. I finished this book solely for the purpose of finding out what happens at the end. I honestly didn’t find myself in favor of the characters because they all just seemed so surface-level. While the plot is enticing, I won’t read this one, possibly ever again.

I enjoyed it but I actually thought the vision piece was a throw away...the story would have been just as good without it. This was a quick listen with a devastating end.

2/5 stars. Wanted the like it more, felt like I had heard same story before, just with a cancer twist.

This book was so depressing. While I wanted to find out how it all ended, I was left feeling dissatisfied.

What a book! I could not put this one down. I wanted life to go away so that I could just keep flipping those pages! The author threw surprise after surprise at me and when I thought I knew where the story was going it took a turn.
The relationships were very well developed and complex. I really didn't know who to really like aside from the protagonist. Extremely well done!

Wow. Not what I was expecting. So much better. I did not see the ending coming. But it was perfect.
