"From bestselling author Diane Chamberlain comes an irresistible new novel. North Carolina, 2018: Morgan Christopher's life has been derailed. Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, she finds herself serving a three-year stint in the North Carolina Women's Correctional Center. Her dream of a career in art is put on hold-until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will see her released immediately. Her assignment: restore an old post office mural in a sleepy southern town. Morgan knows nothing about art restoration, but desperate to leave prison, she accepts. What she finds under the layers of grime is a painting that tells the story of madness, violence, and a conspiracy of small town secrets. North Carolina, 1940: Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey, wins a national contest to paint a mural for the post office in Edenton, North Carolina. Alone in the world and desperate for work, she accepts. But what she doesn't expect is to find herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets behind closed doors, and where the price of being different might just end in murder. What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies?"-- Provided by publisher.

I think there was a good story in there, even though I guessed the end about 3/4 of the way in. The problem for me was the unbearably amateurish writing and dialog. It was so bad, I was glancing through the pages just to get through the book. In addition, the character development was so superficial, I never cared about any of them.

Quite enjoyed this book. One of the best ones I've read during the pandemic! Mystery, little romance, twists!

Loved the intertwining of history, art, and racism, with a little romance. Quick, but very enjoyable read.

I just didn't find it as riveting as some of her others, although it was a good mystery! It just took a while to really get going.

Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain is a psychological mystery. It is a fascinating look at small town life, both in 1940 and in 2018. I admit that I was completely enthralled by this book. In 2018, Morgan Christopher is serving a three-year sentence for a crime she did not commit. After serving one year, she is approached by a lawyer who will see to it that she is released on the condition that she restore an old mural. In 1940, Anna Dale is commissioned to paint a post office mural in the town of Edenton, North Carolina. Upon finishing the artwork, Anna and the mural disappear suddenly, never to be seen again until Morgan is asked to restore the artwork. Layer by layer, she discovers many details that lead to Anna’s real story. Edenton is put under the microscope and out comes prejudice, death, love, friendship, jealousy, etc. The book alternates between 1940 and 2018, taking the reader along for the mysterious story of a mural and the two artists who put their heart and soul into it. And the ending is totally unpredictable and very satisfying. Diane Chamberlain is an expert when it comes to writing about human relationships and she does not disappoint here.
