LauraSteinert & rugolin nailed it. Nothing to add. I should have listened. What a waste of time.
Some pompous farts have lauded it though, as expected.

Awful music, awful filming in the dark, what's to like? Maybe the only saving grace is knowing that even 100 years ago parents gave in to the their offspring and/or treated them so badly it's little wonder the offspring grew into monsters. Liam Cunningham is a good actor, I just didn't like this character - so well-played Mr. C. The only thing I did like was the original film footage of the era & witness to the hateful destruction of humankind, which we just keep repeating.

What is wrong with this kid? It's 1919, he's the son on an American diplomat, he dresses like a girl, throws inexplicable tantrums, and no amount of discipline can bring him under control. The ending is somewhat obtuse and the dramatic music and camera techniques don't serve to make it less so, but overall I thought the movie made a statement. I liked the music score, but I admit sometimes I thought it overdone. Some very good acting and cinematography. I don't know why people think it was slow moving. It was the right pace for what it was. For me, it held my attention and challenged my mind, which is what a film should do. It isn't what I would call art house, though I suppose it does push a few boundaries. It certainly isn't not Hollywood. That's not a bad thing in my book, but if you are led to expect that because of a few "Hollywood" actors then be warned. In some ways it made me think of Bertolucci's "the Conformist," though also very different. 4 our of 5.

Way too slow moving (would benefit greatly from a thorough editing). I didn't like the content much either (too dark, too predictable). But, well acted.

There are some movies that shout out;"I am a slow moving art house film that only a small niche of pseudo- intellectual cinephiles could possibly sit through" I am not sure there is much more to the story other than if your a stubborn bratty prodigy you will turn into a fascist leader for some unknown murky Freudian reason. The movie tests your patience with it's glacial pacing, lack of narrative and pedestrian writing. The director seems to have forgotten the dramatic rule of "Show don't tell". Your enjoyment of the film will probably depend how much you enjoy being told and told everything and shown next to nothing.

An extremely cold and bleak portrait of a child who would one day become a post World War I fascist European leader. If you are not knowledgeable about the causes of WWI and WWII, you will not get the full impact of this film. Fascism, the subject matter, for Americans, used to be academic as we Americans tried to understand how fragile European nation states fell under the spell of authoritarian leaders. Well, the film surprisingly, is more relevant today as the USA and Europe are in danger of losing their "liberal" democracies and trading them in for more authoritarian style forms of government.

Let me translate a bit from the back of the DVD case so you will be prepared. " audacious, senses-shattering feature" means not only will you be bored, but there is no background or motivation for any of the characters. "A stylistically fearless tour-de-force," means filmed mostly in the dark so you can't see that the set dressing is not time-period correct or opulent, and the clothes are fancy for the mom and dad, but the boy wears dresses and long hair. And the film "reaches fever-pitch delirium thanks to ravishing cinematography and a thunderous score " must mean that fever-pitch of screaming at the TV that something better happen soon as there are only 20 minutes left, and so far noting has happened at all, and "ravishing" has been inserted where the original word ( f**ked-up) was changed by using a thesaurus. And the "thunderous score"refers to the fact that really loud classical music was used to create dramatic tension because there was no other drama available. Imagine hearing the Jaws theme played at full blast...then no shark, nothing happens. (Repeat 5 times)

If you like watching people torture their children, I guess you'll like this movie.
