The air is unbearably tense as Armand Gamache returns to the Surete du Quebec for his first day of work since being demoted from its command to head of homicide. Amid blistering personal social media attacks, Gamache sets out on his first assignment. He has been tasked with finding a missing woman, but while he leads the search for Vivienne Godin, Three Pines itself is threatened when the river breaks its banks, and a province-wide emergency is declared. As the waters rise, a body is discovered - and the victim's distraught father contemplates a murder of his own. Gamache is a father himself, and is haunted by a question . . . what would he do, if his child's killer might walk free?

Wonderful to have Gamache back at the Sûreté du Québec. Complicated mystery. Always a pleasure to visit the citizens of Three Pines. Kristi & Abby Tabby

What was so different and so interesting about this book, in the long and excellent series by Louise Penny, was that the readers got to go through the entire process of analyzing, over and over, the evidence in hand and experiencing firsthand the frustration felt when that evidence did not "do the job" as expected. Good twists in this story, but the early clues are there if you are reading carefully.

I love Inspecter Gamache, and I love Three Pines. This is the world I would step into if I were given the choice. These deeply flawed, but kind, loving, and often annoying people of the village and of the Súerté are brilliantly crafted characters. Their flaws are outweighed their virtues, morality, and strength. Each character offers the reader an opportunity to inspect her own choices in her own life. They also offer the reader a way to envision forgiving herself and of forgiving others.
These moral/spiritual/societal critique novels offer high quality--and I suspect timeless,--literary merit along with the thrill of a psychological thriller and a police procedural.
Start from the beginning, and you may find this series a life changing adventure.

Not my favourite of the series but Ms. Penny sets the bar so high, it's still an enjoyable read.

This book is a clunker in a normally outstanding series from a very good writer. It is rather like Clara's miniatures that feature prominently in the book. The plot wanders. The wonderful people who live in 3 Pines only play peekaboo. Not a great read.

Always, always one of the best books of the year. Notice I said book, not mystery. I was gobsmacked with the first book in her series which I was lucky enough to read soon after publication. Penny has only gotten better. Don't miss. Don't miss a single book in this series.

Newly published in summer 2019; Inspector Gamache series; by Louise Penny of Canada.
this is the 15th book in the series;

This is yet another excellent plot; fabulous reading experience. Every novel has its plus and minus features: Clara's "miniatures" was a tedious feature in this plot.
Odd---?how did Tracey respond to private msgs if he had no internet?

Penny is a master of writing dialogue along a stream of perceptive nuances and overt outcomes; Wonderfully presented details.

Sadly, I'd guess it will likely be another year or two until a 16th book in the series is published, if the series continues. Don't know, do we?

Louise Penny is one of the best mystery writers ever and raises the genre to literature. There are passages that have made me nearly weep. Always fascinating, emotional, intellectual and surprising.
