In 1924, a young mother, Hattie Breckenridge, is hanged from a tree in her yard by the town mob, accused of a crime that was actually committed by her daughter. Nearly a century later, a young married couple, Helen and Nate, abandon the comforts of suburbia to begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams on the same forty-four acres of rural land where Hattie once lived. When they discover that this charming property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by Hattie's story and the tragic legend of her descendants, three generations of "Breckenridge women, " each of whom died amid suspicion, and who seem to still be seeking something elusive and dangerous in the present day.

Small town is so small town.
What an opening to a pretty great story. The fast paced ending was fun. Will probably check out another title from this author in the future.
Any suggestions from anyone?

This was pretty good! I love good ol fashioned ghost stories, and this didn't disappoint. It did seem to drag on here and there though, and it took me forever to finish because there were parts that just didn't keep my attention. Overall, worth a read.

I really enjoyed this book -- I couldn't put it down! A great, spooky read for this time of year.

Such a great twist on a classic theme! Instead of moving into a haunted house, Helen and Nate Wetherell build one. Using artifacts from their small Vermont town, they infuse their house with ghosts - and start to find some answers to the town's mysterious past.

I was fully immersed in this book but I predicted halfway through where it was headed and drew my own conclusion which turned out to be right. I wasn't happy about the ending though. I actually envisioned an old Scooby Doo episode and half expected The Mystery Machine to pull up any minute.

An enjoyable, modern take on the haunted house. Instead of moving into one, the protagonist builds her own haunted house after becoming obsessed with a local family's multi generational tale of tragedy. Most of the ending was easy to figure out, but there was enough intrigue to keep me hooked until the conclusion.

This isn't your typical ghost story. It is more character-based and so it's a little slow for the average ghost-story reader. It IS however, a really good mystery, so I recommend it.

Another great ghost story from Jennifer McMahon. This and The Winter People are my 2 favourites from this author. It was really interesting and creative, lots of nature which I also enjoyed.

Effective tale of the ghost of Breckenridge Bog in Vermont, where Nate and Helen have moved to build their dream house. They meet up with Olive, a 14-year-old ragamuffin who's looking for the ghost Hattie's buried treasure on their property. Gradually, the ghost-hunting begins and their stories converge. Saw some things coming a mile away; some genuine surprises.

“First, we’ve got a witch ghost, now there’s a buried treasure? Is this Scooby fucking Doo?”
