Who would expected that the Brighton Express passenger train would be carrying so many marked people that after the carnage of the derailment, the "accident" would be followed by a cascade of murders and attempted murders of survivors? The author has created another page-turning police procedural crime thriller that races to a surprise ending. Marsten continues, as in earlier books in this series, with sub-themes of social commentary on 19th century British class, religious, and nationalist issues. The large number of casualties from the story-opening train collision reveals the limitations of medical treatment (and the early use of chloroform) in the mid-1800s. In future novels in this series, will Sergeant Leeming be spared disagreeable train trips by the appearance of the horseless carriage?
