Mary Downing Hahn was one of my favorite writers of scary stories when I was a kid. Classics like Wait 'Til Helen Comes and Time for Andrew: A Ghost Story remain some of my favorite books that I read during my childhood.
Maybe it's just the fact that I'm a grown woman now, but the shine's kind of fallen off the apple. Whenever I see a new book from this author, I pick it up in the hope of recapturing a bit of the magic I recall from when I was a kid. I have yet to find it.
The Girl in the Locked Room is a decent story, I will say that. Jules moves with her parents to a small town in Virginia where her father is restoring an old Victorian house, a house whose description is rather creepy, and said creepiness immediately gets to Jules. The ensuing mystery of "the girl" is interesting, as is the repeated sequence that led to the death of "the girl's" family (which did give me a couple of chills). It's just... the magic of those earlier books isn't there. Something's missing.
Still, if you're looking for a light read that has a small creep factor, this book might be for you.
It was not as scary as I was afraid it might be. It was a good ghost story. I liked that it went back and forth between the ghost and the girl who could see the ghost.
A pretty gentle read for a young person who likes things a little spooky or ghostly. Not as scary as her previous novel Took.
Really well done thriller! The dad is a total narcissist and drags his family around the country for his work. The mom's a writer and really self absorbed. This leaves Jules plenty of time to go ghost hunting! It's well written and paced, well plotted, and the ending is satisfying.
(****SPOILER**** My only complaint was the inclusion of Frozen Charlotte dolls for no reason.)
A creepy ghost story with a haunting cover that is sure to capture the attention of scary story enthusiasts.
Im soo happy this book came out! I am really excited to read it, love this author and her books!
