It is the summer of 1863, and as the Civil War rages between dinosaur-mounted armies down south, and a tense New York City seems on the brink of exploding into riots, Magdalys Roca and the other children at the Colored Orphan Asylum are trying to survive; but when she receives a letter telling her that her brother Montez was wounded, Magdalys knows that somehow she must reach him--and just possibly her ability to communicate telepathically with dinosaurs may come in handy.

Dinosaurs meet the Civil War in this alternate history that weaves facts with sci-fi/fantasy to tell the story of an orphan who just wants to save the world as she knows it.

This unusual book is set in New York City during the Civil War. For the most part it is clever historical fiction with a rather large twist: there are dinosaurs. It doesn't discuss how or why there are dinosaurs. Presumably they didn't go extinct after all.

The book follows a group of non-white orphans during the Conscription Riots of 1863. It was fun, but also illuminated an historical episode that I was unfamiliar with. I did have to wrap my brain about humans and dinosaurs co-existing, but once that feat of mental gymnastics was completed, I really enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it.
