Mara Alencar's mother Ana is the moon, the sun, the stars. Ana, a struggling voice-over actress, is an admirably brave and recklessly impulsive woman who does everything in her power to care for her little girl. With no other family or friends her own age, Ana eclipses Mara's entire world. They take turns caring for each other--in ways big and small.

Park wrote "The Caregiver" about a mother daughter relationship that produced violent events in Brazil during aggressive political and social reform. Ana always had Mara's best interest at heart but do the events justify the means? Mara eventually lives in southern California as a caregiver and past events still live in the present. Park masterfully carries us from place to place, mother to daughter, past to future. Some parts gentle, some violent. He showed depth of characters and ultimate resilience.

This is about one particular caregiver but very little about caregiving.
