Tamirat's debut is a genre-defying book. At first it seems like it could be a dystopia. But then the setting changes and we find ourselves in 21st century Boston following an Ethiopian-American teenager and learning about her interactions with a charismatic member of the Ethiopian community and what led her and her father to the strange island of the beginning.

I can't say that I liked this book. I tried to listen to the audiobook first, but I gave up at just under 50%. Eventually I picked up a physical copy of the book, and I found that a much easier reading experience. I liked the writing. I enjoyed the Boston parts a lot more than the island.

Could this be a jab at Liberian history and reality, or is the author not aware of similarities to her story in the past? Not that I have much knowledge of Liberia.
