An interesting book. Much of it is historical coverage of what happened in the first year and has already been covered in the news and by others, but it does have a few surprises. I have not heard any coverage about the movement against Trump under the Anti-Emolument Act and I am fascinated by how Johnston got a Trump tax return. All of his coverage about Trump's personal economics is fascinating. That being said, it is obvious how much he dislikes Trump and I thought that sometimes he gets pretty close to slander. If he is willing to so overtly dislike the president, he must be pretty sure of his facts.
“Donald Trump has said 1,591 false things as U.S. president” (as of May 28, 2018)
by Daniel Dale, Washington Bureau Chief, The Toronto Star
Good selection if you are doing detailed factual research on current events and politics. Say for a school paper or a letter to the editor. Or to argue your point w/your brother in law at the next family gathering. As a general interest read, while this book attempts to set out the facts, in doing so becomes a little too wide-ranging and disjointed. If you follow the daily current events in the newspaper and radio, most of the topics presented here you've probably already heard. Professor Johnston's prior book "Free Lunch" presents a more coherent and approachable view of his thesis on current day US national politics in my opinion.
David Cay Johnston has been following and writing about Donald Trump for many years. This book has many details about Trump's financial investments and problems. Johnston also deals with Trump's speeches and tweets, many full of contradictions. A favorite passage from the book: "That millions of people voted for a narcissistic, know-nothing con artist who has spent his entire life swindling others while repeatedly urging followers to commit criminal acts of violence against his critics reveals more about America than about Trump."
I am surprised that the library personnel get to expound, with their views in attendance, on another's liberal's slanted, outrageous, really, publication. I am so tired of the blather, which written in the same old unhappy, nothing more than his opinion, verbiage; while purporting to be factually correct, being praised by another Democrat, of course!
Perhaps there are a few truths in this new publication. But I am pretty sure that this is just a more-fantasy spiked opinion book, written by another Hate Trump because he beat Hillary, author.
I generally keep my opinions, regarding politics especially, to myself. I really am not interested in the writings of a disenchanted author. And I do not admire a library employee expounding on theirs. It is not the place! The book has a rightful place. The opinion is out of place.
