HOUSE OF CARDS captures the ruthless, toxic, amoral politics of our times. It's pure nihilism in that power is all there is. Ideology whether right or left is merely window dressing. Season 5 ends appropriately given the #MeToo fate of lead actor Kevin Spacey.

In light of the 2016 election, it begs to question if the POTUS campaign was stranger than "House of Cards" and who stole whose play book. S5 had all the same slimy elements: fake news, betrayals, Russian meddling, October surprise, Wikileaks, party discord, Ohio and Pennsylvania, Bohemian Grove ... FBI investigations; dreadful to follow the toxic swampy subplots especially after Spacey's coming out amid sexual abuse allegations in real life. Worth to note that Robin Wright directed the two final episodes and did a good job while playing the most important role in the entire series ... likely in the final S6 as well.

Just when you thought the Underwoods couldn’t get any more unrepentantly evil, along comes Season 5 of “House of Cards”. I cannot think of two more ruthless, power-mad, stop-at-absolutely-nothing-to-get-what-they-want people than President Frank Underwood and First Lady/Vice President Claire Underwood. Frank is more hot-tempered, while Claire is the quintessential Ice Queen, but both of them believe that the end justifies the means. There is a lot going on in “House of Cards”, much of it being the normal (it seems) scheming, lying, back-stabbing, and double-crossing that goes on in the world of politics. Season 5 finds the Underwoods struggling mightily to keep ahold of the power they’ve worked so hard to acquire. There is a sense of desperation among many of the characters, as if they had been dumped into a shark-infested ocean of politics and intrigue, and are just trying to survive as best they can. Of course, that desperation leads many of them to do whatever nasty, sinister things they have to, in order to either keep the power they have, or to keep their access to those that have the power. “House of Cards” has always been an extreme example of the use and abuse of power, of getting it and keeping it. Season 5 continues that story.

Wikiquote has some quotes for S1 to S5, including this most vile one:

The American people don't know what's best for them. I do. I know exactly what they need. They're like little children, Claire, children we never had. We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths. Teach them right from wrong. Tell them what to think and how to feel and what to want. They even help writing their wildest dreams, crafting their worst fears. Lucky for them, they have me, they have you. Underwood, Underwood, 2016. 2020. 2024. 2028. 2032. One nation, Underwood.

and this:
This is where the real power is. No women or presidents allowed. ... And while these men here can't swing the votes of an entire nation, one measly state? Well, that they can do. And that's why I'm here. So welcome to Elysian Fields
