This movie is 38 years old!! Scary. It reflects the culture at that time, and I think this will make it unappealing to some viewers, especially those who were not even born in 1980. However, I think it is worth watching for Eileen Brennan's performance alone, which is hysterical. Watch for the scene when she and Private Benjamin first meet, she asks Judy Benjamin her name, and then mimics her. It is a priceless gem of an acting job by a great character actress who is no longer with us.

Other than a fix of nostalgia this one doesn't carry the weight it once did for me. The culture has shifted too far away for it to make much sense or maybe I've done the shifting. Either way I can't find much to recommend here.

This will go on our "one and done" list. No need to watch it again. The basic training part of the movie was fun and showed Benjamin at her best. As for the rest of the movie, there was gratuitous sex and a woman who continually made poor choices regarding men. This is not a movie that builds women up by showing a strong woman, To the contrary, it puts them in a poor light.

If you want to watch a movie that shows women at their best, this is not it. Try something else.

An excellent dramedy, I've always loved PRIVATE BENJAMIN. Equal parts funny and serious, it walks the tightrope better than most films I've seen. PRIVATE BENJAMIN tells the story of a spoiled Jewish American "princess" who, after suffering grief and heartbreak, is convinced that the Army is the place for her because of a wonderful recruitment pamphlet displaying condos and yachts in Europe. When she arrives at basic training, she swiftly learns otherwise. She slowly transforms from Judy Benjamin to Private Benjamin, learning the hard way and showing her worth. Goldie Hawn isn't what I'd label as stupendous at her craft, but she is fantastic as Judy, spot on with her performance; if anything marks her as a great actress, this is it. It's fantastic and utterly watchable every time. I highly recommend PRIVATE BENJAMIN.

Good clean 80's fun. Goldie Hawn in her prime rollicking through adventures in the Army and in love. 80's classic.

"What, the Army couldn't afford drapes? I mean, I'll be up at the crack of dawn here!"
