This book is marketed as being the first in a new series. That description is very deceiving, as although it is the 1st in a new series, this series is a spin-off of another of her series, "Home Repair is Homicide", which has 16 books. Too many events from the past are referenced in this "new" series, without the adequate background information. I understand that this author has a wide following, however, as disjointed as the writing was in this book, I have to wonder why, unless she had an entirely different writing style in her other series. She changed paths so often, including within paragraphs, that I felt as if I was reading a book written by someone who was under the influence. Personally, I enjoy reading cozy mysteries that are focus on various culinary areas, and I normally find the cooking and/or baking descriptions in the books to feel quite homey and soothing. That was not the case in this book. Her descriptions were somehow very jumpy, rather flowing through the steps, as well as being extremely repetitive. Recently, I had finally given up Joanne Fluke's "Hannah Swensen Cookie Shop" mysteries as the later books had becoming so repetitive I just couldn't do it anymore, but I found myself longing for her books after reading just a few chapters of this one. Finally, as far as being a culinary series goes, no self respecting baker would ever publish a recipe that does not have a separate ingredient list, instead writing the ingredients and amounts within the paragraphs of the recipe. That, along with explaining at the start of the recipe that making cheesecakes is a complicated process (it's not...cheesecakes are one of the most simple things to bake), make me wonder how much basic kitchen knowledge the author even has.
