Pino is seventeen and living in Mailn Italy when the Nazi’s invade. His family sends him away thinking he will be safe, instead he treks across the Alps helping Jews escape. Later it becomes a double agent, working for the Nazi’s and feeding information to the resistance. Who can you trust, what must you do to survive? Pino came of age, in the midst of chaos. This is based on a real person; the book follows the character from the beginning to the end of the WWII in Italy. I found it to be moving, difficult, and disturbing while consider the costs of war.

An absolutely incredible tale, well-told. Historical fiction, it's the true story of a 17-year-old young man in Milan, Italy during WWII. Through a circuitous series of circumstances, Pino Lella becomes a spy for the Italian partisans and the Allies. He takes great risks, and endures the scorn of his countrymen, who are unaware of where his loyalty lies. I don't want to give away his tribulations, but the narrative of this extraordinary patriot is well worth reading. One of the best books ever!! Highly recommended!!!

What an amazing and intriguing story that is so well told! Based on the experiences of a 17 year old Italian boy during the last 2 years of the WWII, this novel combines fact with fiction - a good formula for any historical fiction novel. The first part is a wonderful read of the joys the teen has mountain climbing in Italy's mountains bordering Switzerland and, then, using that skill to guide escaping Italian Jews to safety in Switzerland. There are many hair raising moments in that section. The next section describes what the teen sees as a driver for the Nazi general who oversees the Nazi war effort in northern Italy. As a spy for the Italian resistance, he reports his observations which are then transmitted to the Allies. The tension in this section keeps the reader turning the pages. The last section tells what happened to the main characters after the war ended. Did they live happily ever after? The author relied on many first hand accounts, including the hero of this story, still alive and now in his 80's, and archival documents to write this account. The novel ends with a wonderful insight into living happily after such horrific experiences that the old Italian man had witnessed as a teen.

There is much to admire and enjoy about this wonderful novel, which is based on an old man's memories working for the Italian Resistance during World War II. It's a history lesson, an action and adventure novel Hemingway could have written , and a love story, all rolled into one; and above all, a remarkable tribute to the selfless heroism of an incredible young man, Pino Lella. Highly recommended. I loved it.

An excellent read. I cannot add much more to the comments that have already been posted. The story is based on the life experience of a young Italian during the war.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Don't let the 500 pages intimidate you - it is a page turner. I really appreciated that the author included an 'aftermath' section at the end to share what the future held after the war for the main characters of the story. That's something you don't usually get with a fiction story.

I didn't have a lot of information on the Italian aspect of WWII out side of the movie "The Scarlet and the Black with Gregory Peck. This book filled in some important gaps in my WWII knowledge

Beneath The scarlet sky is an excellent historical novel based on a true story that takes place in Italy during WWII and is one of the richest ionic World War II stories about action, adventures, hope, love, tears, war and epic heroism.
