On the beaches and cliffs of North Devon, lone women have become victims in a terrifying game where only one player knows the rules. And when those rules change, the new game is murder. But a madman on the loose feels very far from the crumbling, seaside home of ten-year-old Ruby Trick. Instead she lives in constant fear of school bullies, the dark forest crowding her house into the sea, and the threat of her parents divorce. Helping her father to catch the killer seems like the only way to keep him close. As long as the killer doesn't catch her first.

Dark. Metaphorical darkness envelopes daily existence. Immature adults, dysfunctional children populating the North Devon coast run amuck. In particular, the malaise pervading the Trick household is thicker than molasses. Further afield, the playing out of insidious fantasies among the hamlets has taken root. Sexual retribution is afoot. Pub based cowboy posses roam the country lanes to champion justice. Add to all this the brooding, foreboding countryside and atmosphere round Ruby Trick's village of Limeburn. Never, ever, ignore or underestimate Mother Nature while being obsessed by human games. The author herself states she had a difficult year while writing the novel. Some of that distress has suffused this book. A synonym for depression: The Facts of Life and Death.
