When a teenage joyrider crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma, a routine DNA test reveals a connection to an unsolved murder from twenty-two years before. It's a cold case that should be straightforward. But it's as twisted as the DNA helix itself. Meanwhile, Karen is mired in grief and guilt after the death of her partner. She finds herself irresistibly drawn to another mystery that she has no business investigating, a mystery that has its roots in a terrorist bombing two decades ago. Karen's intuition is telling her something doesn't add up. But is she onto something? Or has she, as her boss has been anticipating, gone too far this time?

Out of Bounds is my first book by Val McDermid and I liked it very much, once I figured out what all was going on! (At one point I found myself thinking "Good grief. How many cases are there going to be in this book??) I like Karen a lot. I enjoy how her mind works and how she deals with her superiors, who aren't as intelligent as she is. Now for my confession. I'm totally unable to resist a book where the characters are saying "Aye" and "wee", haha. I'm eager to read the next book in the series!

Poor. Unbelievable characters (eg. Detective Sergeant). Too much soul searching and personal reminiscences going back to dead former partner. Forget this series (DC Karen Pirrie) and try Tony Hill.

One has to pay close attention to a novel of this quality with a number of threads running through it. Totally engaging. Well done!

Out of Bounds (A Karen Pirie novel) by Val McDermid. This is a Scottish police procedural, the 30th novel from one of my favourite authors. McDermid has three series, including the one that became the TV series The Wire in the Blood. I highly recommend her books, and Out of Bounds in particular. Character development, relationships, setting, politics, and plot, all so satisfying. Thank goodness for McDermid's 'addiction to words.'

Val McDermid is a really, really good writer. I've read most of her books including another Karen Pirie book. This book is just a big disappointment. Horrible.

First book I have read by this author. I really liked it. I liked the cold case aspect. I liked the forensics and detective work. I liked the characters and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

Too ponderous.

This is the first Val McDermid book I’ve read. I look forward to reading more books with Scottish Detective Karen Pirie as the main character. I love books with multi-dimensional characters and they abound in this book.

Not a perfect mystery, but close. Delicious writing. Mostly unexpected twists and turns in plot. Humanist themes.

And, last but not least—satisfying, intelligent and well-modulated humor.
