The marriage records were recorded with the clerk of the court or the county clerk.
Ministers' returns were lists made by the ministers of marriages they had performed. These lists were filed with the county clerk or clerk of the County Court. Usually found loose, they were sometimes bound or copied into books. The lists of marriage certificates issued were lists of certificates or licenses issued by the county clerk to allow the marriage by an authorized minister.
