It's 1983. The Cold War is hot. The threat of nuclear conflict looms. Born and raised in East Germany, Martin Rauch is sent undercover, as Moritz Stamm, to West Germany, to work for a top General in the Bundeswehr. Officially, his job is to gather intelligence on the placement of the Pershing II Missiles. A secondary gig develops, infiltrating youth culture through close relationships with the General's two children. But nothing and no one are as they seem.

Real world stuff in this series (Able Archer), makes it better than if it were pure fiction.

99 Luftballons is played at least twice- Apropos, as film's ultimately about how pawns are used by the warmongering, insane superpowers- and the bootlicking lackeys among the pawns do anything to curry favor while regard for the average soldier or citizen is at their mercy.

Sets you on the edge of your seat in the first two- Then once again later.
It's not totally believable- but I think that's fine given the genre.
And yes; sex, twists, turns, Trabbis and pop culture from the era.

Fantastic German series involving real events when Germany was divided in the Cold War. Uses real events such as television news programs, plane crashes, to build the tension between East and West Germany as a young East German soldier is forced to spy on the West. Acting is superb.

Okay, I'm biased grew up in that time period and remembered the tensions of that year (and I like the Americans). Started off great, great premise about putting a Stassi agent in 1983 era NATO high command (sure there was a big stretch about having a suitable double that could be eliminated without any fuss). And yes the use of incidents from 1983 ratchets up the tension (like the KAL 007 shootdown). It was an eye-opener to see the viewpoint of the West and East Germans stuck between the USA and USSR in the Cold war. Truth be told the music was a blast. However it really went pear shaped (for me) in episode 6, when Alex Edel kidnaps General Arnold Jackson and at gunpoint tries to force Jackson to record a statement about the U.S. missile deployment (and someone is killed as a result). And in the next episode Jackson and Edel are working together like nothing happened, really guys???!!

OK, I'm biased. This is the land of all the people who came before me, Germany. I was about the same age as the main character and in Germany twice in the early 1980's, including crossing over from the west to the east (Berlin) with stonefaced guards scrutinizing my passports, etc. Of course it resonated with me and I loved the pop music that you hear throughout.

Having said that, I loved, loved this series. Great story, great characters, great sets, great acting, everything!

By the way, Germans really did smoke as depicted in Deutschland 83. (I hope that there are less smokers there circa 2017!)

Not bad. I wonder if the scene early on in the movie was accurate: could someone do direct dialling for West to East Germany at that time ? I was in Berlin around that time; passing West to East through Checkpoint Charlie as a tourist. Things weren't that loose.

I enjoyed this series! What was great about it was also the fact that it includes real people from this era as part of the story--Petra Kelly, Udo Lindenberg, etc. Also the advancement of tech --computers and Walkman. Not to forget the music of that time period.

It gives a different point of view of the cold war era, just before The Wall came down.

On par with the best BBC and Scandinavian productions. Standout soundtrack. Fast-paced storytelling. Watchable and believable characters. According to the extras, this is the first German series to hit American audiences. I hope it is the first of many. Brilliant! Highly recommended.

Great characters with a story that keeps you watching. The 1980s setting in both East and West Germany is well realised. There's suspense and humour all the way through!
