Prioress Eleanor is at her father's estate, Woodstock. She and her brother, Hugh, who will be the next Baron, are attending their father who is dying. Queen Eleanor, who has just given birth to a daughter, and her attendants are also staying at Woodstock. Mistress Hawis, one of the queen's attendants, is murdered and Prioress Eleanor and her attendants, Brother Thomas and Sister Anne, must find the killer before the queen is disturbed by the news, and they must also free Hugh's son, Richard, of suspicion as well as getting him out of the clutches of Father Eliduc. The side issues of anti-Semitism, greed, and tension between Hugh and his teenage son made for an engrossing story. Prioress Eleanor, as usual, managed to finesse those around her into helping find information.
