was engrossed by the slowly peeled back layers of the world and magic system that are unveiled as Elli sheds her sheltered upbringing and begins to understand something about the history of the Kupari magic. Although Elli was understandably immature, I enjoyed her character development as she came to terms with having the future she always expected ripped away, and then grappling with the fact that people still want to control her, and how easy it would be to let them.

The premise was interesting but ultimately the writing didn't work for me. The writing made the world seem ordinary and boring. The world is on the smaller scale, which I didn't expect and ended up having so many questions about this world, the Valtia and the Kupari. The first 80 pages were hard to get through, but if you push through them the plot picks up pretty quick from there. I have a neutral opinion when it comes to the protagonist; I don't hate her but I don't love her - she doesn't have a personality to me and so doesn't show up on my radar.

I'm not sure if I'll read the sequel. I want to know what happens but the writing makes the reading process harder to deal with. I really wished I'd liked it more because the idea of magic choosing the next queen was really interesting. If you liked Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong, you might like this.

Horrible scenes of whipping and torture as the priests try to force the magic out of the main character. Could not stomach it--too gratuitous. Not for your more sensitive teen.

Awash with magic, this series brims with excitement, action, longing, love and originality. A girl who is promised to be a powerful magic wielder turns out to be completely empty of magic. Trusted priests are eager to help unearth the mystery—or is something else at work?

Right from the beginning, you suspect there’s more to this than meets the eye, especially when you read about a cloistered queen, bloodletting and the use of lead paint on the face. Does the queen die young because her power drains her or are there more sinister forces at play?

The author plays with the truth, drawing out the revelation in teasing increments, while filling her story with unforgettable characters and descriptive backgrounds. Rarely have fire and ice been written about with such—flair. There are mischievous younger sisters, suspicious rivals, fanatical magic wielders and hostile barbarians at the gates. It all makes for a potent story, one that promises action, sorcery and love on an even grander scale in the upcoming sequels.

In spite of the fact that this world is largely male oriented, the powerful and abiding love of women is there in the background, a quietly sustaining yin to the masculine yang. It makes this a story both men and women can heartily enjoy.

For three hundred years the Valtias have ruled the Kupari from the Temple on the Rock, the only wielders of the unique Kupari magic who can balance both fire and ice. The Valtia uses her magic to protect and shelter her people, but the magic exacts a terrible price, and these girl-queens die young, bodies devoured by their own terrible power. Elli has been raised in the Temple as the Saadella, heir to the Valtia, schooled in service to the Kupari people, prepared to receive the magic when the current Valtia dies. Yet despite the fact that Elli is prophesied to be the most powerful Valtia who ever lived, when her predecessor dies, the magic does not enter her, leaving the Kupari vulnerable to the increasingly hostile raids of the neighouring Soturi. Exiled to the Outlands, Elli takes shelter with a group of bandits who defy the rules of the Temple, and refuse to turn their magic wielders over to the Temple Elders. For the first time, Elli has a reason to question the order under which she was raised, bringing to light the terrible abuses of the very system which she was sworn to uphold.
