Excellent film about the child abuse scandal in Boston. The cast is amazing and the story is solid. Lots of stuff that unfolds in this movie.

The topic was big. The movie itself was rather slow.

Interesting look at what it takes to not only have people believe that abuse took place, but the number of years it took the various players to take action. Heartbreaking because this has happened all over the world, in multiple religions and is still taking place. I do wish we had more Canadian stories developed like this for us to learn our own history. It wasn't just group homes and indigenous schools where churches abused children, it happened everywhere because as mentioned in this movie, everyone knew about it and was involved.

! A must see for anyone who thinks that children are safe anywhere! It behoves us to care for them better at all times.

Riveting movie. This shows how absolutely critical a free press is to a democracy. The investigative journalists of the Boston Globe had the courage and tenacity to stand up to the entrenched corruption of the Catholic Church and lawyers willing to sell out. This was eye-opening in terms the scale of the abuse and what it implies about other institutions wielding money and power. Don't miss it.

Impressive. Normally movies of this type tend to be politically biased and unreliable. This seems really well done though. Very pertinent because of the current synod happening in Rome right now, the Synod on Young People --- creepy. And, given the ultra Liberal environment that is Hollywood, and the incredibly fond affinity Liberals have towards Pope Francis, it is really surprising this movie got made. One has to wonder about how they were able to pull together the financing, production work, the talent, etc. given the subject matter.
Pope Francis has been protecting Cardinal Wuerl, McCarrick, and others - this stuff having been so much in the news recently. Ringleaders. Just this past Friday in Pennsylvania 7 out the the 8 diocese have been subpoenaed by the Federal Government looking for information relating to alleged behavior of 300 clergy. RICO investigation? F.B.I.? And Buffalo and southern California in the news just in the last couple of weeks, and the network running through South America. Primarily homosexual pederasts, no one should kid themselves about that. And a Pope who seems as if he may be apostate. Taking care of his friends? While leading his flock astray? There is starting to be open talk of how he may be removed from office. I feel sorry for my friends who are Catholic, good people who shouldn't have to be dealing with this.
Also importantly, there are those in the Catholic Church who are trying to fight this at great personal cost. Potential heroes being molded like Archbishop Vigano for example. And the late Father Joseph Moreno.

Interesting and well done, with direction and acting. An interesting part of history as well as another film showing how good investigative reporting is the key for reliable reporting of the facts.
Bonus features talk to some of the real persons behind the specialized reporting team at the time, and they also discuss how fewer reporters are being retained by newspapers.
I have looked up the Spotlight on the Boston Globe newspaper website, and found it to be still current with contacts and their description as "The Globe's Spotlight Team consists of six reporters and other staffers who join the team from time to time for special projects."
It was four people at the time of the film, covering the period before and after 2001.
Recommended, along the lines of other good investigative films, such as the All the President's Men (1976), and more recently The Post.

Phil Saviano: You guys gotta understand. This is big. This is not just Boston. It's the whole country. It's the whole world. And it goes right up to the Vatican.

The statistics of 6% is higher than but no less appalling than the 4% estimate in a 2004 report by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, based on surveys completed by the Roman Catholic dioceses in the United States:

Richard (Over the phone:) No, not really, Robby. Sounds low to me. My estimates suggest six percent act out sexually with minors.
Robby: Uh, six percent of what?
Richard: Six percent of all Priests.
Robby: How many Priests do we have in Boston?
Mike: About 1,500. One percent is 15. Six percent is... 90.
Robby: Wait. Nine ... ninety Priests? Is that possible?
Richard: From a metric standpoint, yes. That would certainly be in line with my findings

Tons of memorable quotes at IMDb:

Marty Baron: Sometimes it's easy to forget that we spend most of our time stumbling around the dark. Suddenly, a light gets turned on and there's a fair share of blame to go around. I can't speak to what happened before I arrived, but all of you have done some very good reporting here. Reporting that I believe is going to have an immediate and considerable impact on our readers. For me, this kind of story is why we do this.

Mitchell Garabedian: If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one.
