Excellent acting and writing. This dark tale of romance, action, mystery, and redemption was awesome from start to finish.

Just finished watching this and was fascinated right away. Amazing acting by Eva Green as the medium Vanessa Ives.

The music on this show is incredible.....dark and beautiful and gorgeously emotional. There is so much craftsmanship in the series, that it was over budget. A love story in many dimensions.

Costume, make-up and set design are by far the best things going for this one. Episode 1 Season 1 was the best one and showed a ton of promise but fell completely apart thereafter. Poor writing, directing, and with notable exception of Green and Dalton, crap casting and acting. It was "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" taking itself way too seriously.

At first I was hesitant to watch this series even though I like movies like these with werewolves, Dorian Gray, etc. I have to say I now regret not watching it before. It's a great series. Acting is dead on, no pun intended.

This is a series that will appeal to genre wonks who don't take themselves too seriously. Practically every stereotype from horror literature is represented in one gigantic orgy of interweaving gothic romance story-lines. The casting and performances, however, are outstanding (especially Eva Green and Timothy Dalton) and the production is adequately creepy. If you're able to sit back and watch television exploit and skewer your favorite classic horror stories without getting indignant you may find some enjoyment is Penny Dreadful. What I'm trying to say is Penny Dreadful is like a Smith's song, you could take it seriously but it's more fun if you're in on the joke.

Beautiful actors in or out of pretty period attires, especially draped over Eva Green (recommend to watch her first film "The Dreamers, 2003") My 2 star rating must be in the minority as season three finale is due to broadcast in 2016. Unfortunately the vampire horror genre is not my cup of tea. A super write up at: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jun/06/horror-fiction

A solid watch for me mixing in famous fictional characters from the Victorian age. Enjoyed the nice shocker endings of most of the episodes. I know there's a season 2 but I hope the series continues for a long time.

Loved it. Interwove the stories of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Grey, plus mummy, werewolf, Phantom of the Opera and The Exorcist connections are made and mentions of topical history like Jack the Ripper ... all with some sex scenes thrown in for good measure. Can Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hide on the horizon ? Can't wait for season 2.
