The Affair is one of the best written & best acted TV series I've ever watched. The complexity of relationships has never been explored so intimately & so nuanced in a TV series before IMHO. The 4 main characters are so compelling to watch, esp. the actor who plays Noah & the actress who plays Alison.
There are times when the plot is somewhat unbelievable, as well as the sex, but overall, the emotional experiences of these characters ring very true, and that's what is most important in a dramatic series like this one.

Excuse me for a moment for being sexist, but it is very apparent that this series was made by a woman. And I mean that in the best sense. It's only because most of what we have seen in movies and on television has been made by men. Don't get me wrong. I like men and I like the work they've done, but this series is very refreshing and uses a device that helps break down how men and women perceive things. Noah and Alison enter into an affair. They are both married. Throughout the series, each scene is shown twice, but they are not identical. One is from his perspective and the other is from hers. He would have you believe she came onto him. She would have you believe he pursued her. Of course the series goes way beyond that. Things are complicated. People enter into affairs for a variety of reasons, but once they're in them, feelings arise that can't be ignored. Should the "cheaters" fight their feelings for the good of their families and commitments they have made? Life is not simple. The series offers beautiful landscapes in Montauk, Maine. While all performances are strong, I think Maura Tierney delivers the most compelling performance as the wife and mother who is trying to hold things together.

Intolerably slow, dull and poorly written. Even Mr. Charisma Jimmy McNulty from The Wire couldn't breathe life into this one. Even worse, every second scene involves Jimmy rutting either with wife or waitress. Who has the time or the inclination for it all? Hard to believe Jimmy, a successful writer clearly happy with his lovely, kind and pleasantly wealthy wife, would have any interest in the decidedly homely, charmless and clearly troubled waitress. Why would he bother? This actress played a well drawn psychopath in the Luther TV series but she's all wrong here. The real star of this series is the magnificent scenery of Montauk, New York at the height of summer but relentlessly awful music throughout spoiled even that.

I like THE AFFAIR. It has interesting point of views from the four main characters. It stars Dominic West (of THE WIRE and FINDING DORY); Ruth Wilson (from the British series LUTHER); Maura Tierney (from ER); and Joshua Jackson (from DAWSON'S CREEK). The show takes place in New York with emphasis on Long Island's Montauk. Fun to watch if you have lived in that part of the state. If you like character development or the artistry of acting then this is a great show for you.

I caught the first few episodes on an airplane years ago and was unable to forget these characters, their stories, and the suspenseful frame for the story (murder investigation?). Now slightly addicted to the way the story is told (and widely interpreted) through different characters and back and forth through time. Binge-watching worthy.

Soft porn--couldn't take all the copulating! Trashy, can't understand motivation of two central characters--why do they cheat?

When I started watching this show, I expected it to turn into something very different than what it actually is. This isn't some fluffy love affair between two married people. The show is very well written and acted. The actors are superb. I absolutely love it.

And a dark twisted affair it is. This first season is not as great as the second, but it is a necessary introduction to the minds and hearts of the four integral pieces in this disastrous puzzle. THE AFFAIR is a story just as much about the lovers involved as the people outside of it. It is extremely graphic in this first season, bordering on pornographic in its eroticism for the first half. Then the real story begins to emerge and you are left desperately yearning for more. I promise that, if you can get through the earlier episodes, it'll pay off. Ultimately, it is the shifting vantage points that make this series remarkable. The ambiguity is key. There are no set-in-stone answers and what I get out of this series may not be identical to what you get. That is true art. I highly recommend THE AFFAIR.

I though affairs should be fun---this drama made me depressed.

It is very difficult to like a show with completely unlikable characters. That said, some decent writing, like the mystery theme and the beautiful setting.
