Deceptive advertising. The artwork makes you think it's two families caring for children of other ethnicities, but the real plot centers on a custody battle between two grandparents over their grandchild. Some of the conflict centers (or rather, is thrown on) racial lines, and the movie ends on the note of 'redemption and forgiveness' for both parties, but I feel like there is a huge missed oppurtunity to involve the child in her own battle, not to mention the conflict over whether children grow up better when raised by a community, as opposed by a loving parent. Let's also not bring up the matter of the grandfather's responsibility.

Despite all this, it's a decent movie and I enjoyed watching it, but it could have been much better.

I generously give Black or White a rating of 3 stars. Octavia Spencer & Kevin Costner saved this movie from a minus rating, in my opinion. The final outcome lacked credibility. Why would a judge give custody privileges of a biracial grand daughter to an alcoholic recently widowed white grand father. Sure, Mr. Wonderful was off to rehab. But as we all know, recovery from alcoholism takes a long time even if said alcoholic quits drinking & immediately becomes a model citizen. The black bio father was portrayed in a negative light although he does some redeeming acts. I was not enamored by this movie. Too much stereo typing. People don't change overnight. Black or White was based on a true story but it appears that literary license has been taken. The movie does not depict the final result of what happened years later.

Love Octavia S. she is so versatile, I want to see her more often. Kevin C portrayed a grieving man, deeply flawed because of his drinking (very well played) & his deep seated attitudes - I believed his character. I felt he was a grandfather left in a situation few men have dealt with, especially at age. Few grandfathers know how to tie a bow, let alone manage hair care for little girls.

I liked the cast & I've no idea why it didn't last on big screen. A subject that can make any perspective uncomfortable at times, yet it seemed to resolve to the advantage of all. The language issue... there is no word more disgusting than what I heard here. As for 'swearing', none of us share the very same beliefs, what offends one may not offend another. Someone said, Love is the greatest....and isn't that what the family demonstrated?

This inspired by a true story family saga should be an epic tear jerker but somehow spared viewers most of the sad drama when the film began with a calamity that abruptly turned a man to be a lonely widow to raise a preteen granddaughter from a deadbeat dad and diseased teen mom... While billed as “Cramer vs Cramer” with racial undertone, it was a heartwarming social drama that worked under the film’s special set of parameters in bridging the racial divide through the wisdom of the helpless little girl’s maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. Super performances by Costner as the emotionally complex grandpa and Jillian Estell as the little big girl.

Outstanding movie with outstanding acting and an outstanding script. Within the constraints of a 2-hour drama, this movie well handled the American crack cocaine-alcoholism issues/drug codependency issues; grandparenting custody issues under the subtext of race versus race - upper class versus middle class issues - male parent versus female parent issues beautiful. The movie demonstrates good intensity based upon outstanding acting from Jillian Estell to Octavia Butler to Kevin Costner to André Holland to Anthony Mackie and the entire ensemble cast. Brilliant

It was tougher to get through than we thought and we actually had to watch in 2 rounds. Really hard. I wish it had dealt with race and race tension more comprehensively maybe that would have helped keep it together a little bit more.

Rated 1/10. I gave up on this movie after sticking with it for an hour. It was downright depressing. On the back of the DVD box, it is billed as a comedy-drama. I was unable to find any humour in the time that I watched. There is no humour in a character (Costner's) that is continually portrayed as a drunk.

Reading other comments here, I find it hard to believe that we all watched the same show.

Fantastic movie! Acting by all was suburb! I loved this movie!

Amazingly good movie. Besides the language, taking of Our LORD's name in vain and the lesbian content, it was a great movie. Recommended.
Note: it is not the color of the skin, it is your attitude.

Very good movie, the actors and actresses played their roles quite well. The story line is very good and this movies brings up some very good issues. I would absolutely watch the movie again and recommend to anyone.

Elliot’s court spiel, P1 of 3:
Mr. Anderson... do you dislike black people?
-Not all of them.
Do you have a problem with racial prejudice?
-Is that what you want to make this about, Jeremiah? Really? Well, let's do it then. You've wanted to ever since Rowena first dragged you into this. So yes, we're different, you and I. You want to submit that? Submit it. We have different skin color. Is that the first thing I notice when I see a black man, the color of his skin? Yes. Submit away. Because I can go ahead and submit that it's the first thing you see when you see a white guy.

Elliot’s court spiel, P2 of 3:

Now I don't know why that is any more than I know why when I see a good-looking woman, the first thing I notice are her breasts. Because I do. But if I move onto my next thought quick enough, I'm not a pervert, all right? I'm not a... I'm not a bad guy. I'm just... I'm just mildly flawed. It's the same thing with race. It's not my first thought that counts, it's my second, third and fourth thought. And each and every case I'm in, it comes down to the same thing: The action and interaction I'm having with the person that I'm interacting with. The interaction I've had with Reggie, in case you haven't noticed, hasn't been all that great.

Elliot’s court spiel, P3 of 3:

And I don't need a math tutor to know that it doesn't make me a racist just because he's a crack addict. That column doesn't add up. It just simply totals him out as a... a drug-addled criminal, a liar and a... a thief with no moral compass. He may be able to play you, fool his mother, may be even able to get one over here on Judge Cummins. But he can't fool me, because I see him for exactly what he is. And to this day, he's never once apologized or shown one bit of remorse to me or my wife for the death of our daughter. All right? His mother wants to mollycoddle him, fine. The whole world wants to treat him like a wounded, put-upon child, then do it. I don't really care. I just don't want him infecting Eloise. So, no, Jeremiah, I'm not racially prejudiced, I just don't happen to want your little nephew's broken-down black ass anywhere near my granddaughter.
