Reagan was in the White House, the malls were filled with New Wave fashionistas, and the Goldbergs were living large in the '80s. Documenting his hilariously combative, yet loving family with a video camera nearly as big as he is, eleven-year-old geek Adam is witness to all kinds of insanity from his over-protective, over-the-top mom, quick-tempered dad, rebellious sister, high-strung brother, and super suave grandfather.

Being an 80's pop culture nerd and a guy who was the same age as the show's main character around that time, I really wanted to love this show. It's a sitcom in the post-sitcom era of TV. It takes place in the 1980's. It has a great cast (Wendy Mclendon-Covey, Patton Oswalt narrating, George Segal, Jeff Garlin). As a kid I had all the toy props and posters in the show. It had a decent number of laughs. But even after all that, all I could only find it 'meh'. Not bad. Not great, or even thoroughly good. 'Kinda good'. The show never clicked with me. The 80's material jokes were OK, but I could never get more than an occasional chuckle out of them. The show feels more like it is trying to appeal to the nostalgia of its viewers than it is trying to make a functioning comedic sitcom. Watching the show, I felt like I had seen each and every gag on other shows in the 80's and early 90's. I kept getting the sense that the show was trying so hard to play on tropes from 80's television that it was missing out on being a funny show taking place in the 80s. I kept wanting the show to make its own humor, as shows like 'That 70's Show' had, but it never clicked with me. I'm probably in the minority since the show had several seasons. I gave up after slogging through its first.

I was a teen in the 80's and this DVD set has me flashing back to everything I loved about my those years---the set design and costumes are incredibly accurate (my best friend had the same bedspread as Erica).

Every episode of this show has me laughing out loud with a deep belly laugh! While I didn't grow up in the 80s - wasn't even born - I still love every reference. The family dynamic is absolutely hilarious!

Not long ago, I participated in a survey-style focus group where I had to pick a comedy to watch, then complete a questionnaire. I ended up watching two episodes of The Goldbergs and got hooked on the show. This first season is a real laugh riot, lots of humor. I was a teenager in the '80's, so this show feels so spot on: I remember all those camcorders and top-loading VCR's and 80's fashions, and the mom reminds me of some parents I knew then. Love the grandfather character!-Very smooth/suave!

Growing up in the 80's I find this show so funny. This show is pretty clean humor and reminds me of family sitcoms of it's time. I would recommend if you experienced the 80's.
