One in a series of humorous books about disgusting creatures, The Slug is a look at the land slug. It covers such topics as the slug's two pairs of tentacles, one pair for seeing, one pair for smelling (it can see you're a kid and smell like broccoli), its breathing hole (on the side of its head!), and its pretty gross mucous covering (in order to find a partner, the slug can follow another slug's mucous trail. True love!). Although silly and off-the-wall, The Slug contains real information that will tie in with curriculum.

The Disgusting Critters series puts these misunderstood creatures under a more appealing light. By using caricatures and humour, readers can focus on the facts rather than their unsettling appearance. In the case of the slug, specifically the land slug, they use mucus to move around, and compost vegetation. Both the information and the text is kept to an early grade school level with important words being highlighted in big or block letters. This part is factual while the images and dialogue aim for the humourous. Simple, whimsical and a great series for young children interested in the slimy and weird.
