Meltzer's series of biographies fits a great need -- books about people kids should know about that are easy to read and engaging! They are short enough for pre-readers to listen to, and the text is easy enough for early readers to tackle themselves.

I read this to my usually uber-chatty five year old boy as his bedtime book one night. He was utterly QUIET and captivated! He soaked in all the meaning (I was a bit apprehensive to introduce the concept of racism to his innocent life). Once completed he stated that "the police officer was WRONG for arresting Rosa Parks and that her criminal record photo should be ripped up and all other copies destroyed!". He quietly asked me, "Mommy, are you ever treated badly because of your skin colour?" I hesitated. And chose the honest answer, "Yes, sometimes." . He vowed to defend me if anyone was ever mean to his Mommy because of her darker skin. I was touched to tears (which I quickly hid).

I'm half Trinidadian, a quarter Chinese and a quarter Scandinavian. My husband is Scottish and my boy looks totally Caucasian---he will never have to suffer racism by looks alone. People constantly ask me if I'm babysitting, or if he's adopted, what his dad looks like, where I come from (EDMONTON!!!), where my parents come from, et cetera, et cetera.... Endless intrusive questions. I answer them all knowing that the majority of people are asking honest questions.

I'm so happy I found this book and I will recommend it to all my parent friends---of all races!
