An okay read, not quite as interesting as her "The Woman In Black," though. Most of the characters are likeable, at least. It's very subtle, and nothing really happens until the very end, and a lot is left up to the reader's imagination (and the coincidence that the end throws out is sort of off-putting.)

An atmospheric ghost story. One to snuggle down with on a cold dark night!

Imagine you are in a cozy chair in a warm place on a crummy cold evening, when an older gentleman tells you he has written an account of a strange phenomenon that has haunted him his whole life. This intrigues you enough to accept the written account and spend the whole night reading a story of a ghost that may or may not be a part of one of the most subtle creeping tales that were ever recorded. This is the tale that Susan Hill has so expertly created. I was intrigued from the start and by the end amazed at what she had revealed. Truly one of the best ghost stories ever!

This book is super-atmospheric. It's the kind of book that you want to curl up with on a dark and stormy night, with a steaming cup of tea and a roaring fireplace (or in my case--a kitty in my lap). Everything is dark and dank. People are always giving the protagonist odd looks and refusing to explain themselves. It's really quite spooky. I loved all of that and found myself quickly drawn into this book. In the end, though, the book just ended up fizzling out a bit.

Enjoyed the book. was dissatisfied, however, that the curse and cause of it was left hanging. And why was everyone so afraid of the family and land if only the men were affected.
