In the year 1963 in Yokohama, an innocent romance blossoms between two high school students, Umi and Shun. As Japan recovers from World War II and prepares to host the 1964 Olympics, the mood contains both optimism and conflict as the younger generation struggles to escape the shackles of the past. While trying to save a dilapidated Meiji-era club house from demolition, the relationship flourishes. But a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a shadow on the future and pull them apart.

I am a lover of Studio Ghibli movies, and this has definitely knocked out a few from the top of my favourites list.
This movie is so heart-warming and quaint. It has adorable music, and lovable characters. Definitely a feel good movie. Left me with a smile on my face.

Another great film from Studio Ghibli. As always the music is enchanting and the animation is beautiful.

The softness of this movie reminded me of "Whisper of the Heart" which was also created by Studio Ghibli.

There's a point in this movie where this becomes The Most Awkward Teenage Crush Story, and had it continued down that path, I don't think I could take it seriously.

But it's overall a sweet, fluffy movie.

A remarkable period peace, perfectly capturing 1960s Japan. Nostalgic, sweet, and maybe a little too idealized, but it's really hard to dislike anything about this movie.

Even minor-key Studio Ghibli films like this are just so lovely and warm-hearted.

Yes, the teens are trying to save their school clubhouse, but it would be doing this film a disservice if nothing else were to be said about the relationships between the characters living in post-war Japan, which is where From Up On Poppy Hill truly shines. The dynamic between the two leads, while it doesn't send your heart racing, is lovely in its slow and gentle progression. Even the introduction of what I think is the main issue (as opposed to the demolition of the clubhouse), which I won't spoil here, is presented quietly and dealt with by the characters in much the same way. It is a slow film overall, without any particular spikes as far as action goes, so do keep in mind that if you're looking for a fast-paced movie, this is most likely not it for you (right now).

Pretty weak on the tear jerk scale for a Ghibli Studios flick.

Rather unmagical compared to what I've come to expect from Studio Ghibli. It's probably unfair to compare Goro Miyazaki's work with his father's, but the similarities bring such comparisons to the forefront. It wasn't bad, but nothing about it really stood out to me. I barely remember the story or the characters.

And it needed a cat or two.

Studio Ghibli has done it once again. They have made a beautiful and memorable movie that has touched the hearts of many.

This movie was beyond amazing. The art was great, the characters were charming and the story was outstanding.

5 star movie all the way!
