Randy Newman was a bit of a man out of time when he started in the 60s. A bespectacled, button-down, piano player at the tail end of the shaggy, psychedelic 60s who was largely drawing from pre-rock music (ragtime, jazz, showtunes), he had something in common with fellow L.A. eccentrics Van Dyke Parks, who worked on this album, and Harry Nilsson, who did a covers album of Newman's songs. Along with "Sail Away" and "Good Old Boys," this is his best album, featuring songs made famous by others (Dusty Springfield, Three Dog Night). And it does make you miss the days when a great album could be 30 minutes.
