Irene Chavez, veteran detective of the LAPD, has returned to her roots in rural SW WA state, where she's the only woman detective in the Mason Co. sheriff's dept. She's also the single mother of a 14 year old son, one big reason for the move, as she wants him to grow up the way his long-dead father would have wanted him to. This first in a projected series is a page turner. Irene's on her own when a woman dies in what appears to be a sailing accident off the shores of an island in South Puget Sound, because her boss is on vacation and others are busy with other cases. Anne was a good sailor, knowing these waters well, as her rich family has owned the property for decades and congregates here every August. Anne is the youngest child in the family, at 29, a psychiatrist like her famous father. Her two older siblings are the children of his first marriage, but Anne's his favorite, charismatic and beautiful. The whole family, friends and neighbors keep telling Irene, "Everyone loved Anne." The family wants Irene to call it an accident, and release the body so they can get on with their lives. Unfortunately, Anne's head wound can't have been caused by the boom on the boat, so Irene investigates it as a homicide. Jenkins' sense of place, character, and pacing are all incredible, and this book has the makings of the beginning of a great series.
