If it's a movie based on a true story, then it's sad, like Chasing Mavericks. There was a mixture of every genre, including comedy, drama, sport, romance, etc. Jay is such an inspirational character because he fights for what he wants and does not give up on his dream and goals. The surfing scenes were so intense, especially when he was surfing mavericks. There were so many moments in the movie where I thought Jay died. Like when he was reading the letter to frosty, when he fell into the water, and when frosty was telling his life. I like how they have his name on the wall to show how much of an inspiration he is. I rate this movie a 5/5.

This is a true story about the life of Jay Moriarty, a young surfer. He was drowned while free diving at the age of 22. Gerard Butler performed very well in this film.

I thought this was a decent movie for middle schooler-- it shows what it takes one a kid has a dream or passion and how it then takes follow up with hard work.
Movie does have some serious content alluding to a boyfriend who is abusive to the mom, and alluding to a friend selling drugs.

It's OK if you have nothing else to watch.

Very formulamatic movie, but "based" a true story. Since it's a movie, you can only hope it was faithful to real life. Otherwise, it was entertaining, in a Hollywood inspirational way, very Disney-esque. I agree with previous comments, good to see with your kids or grandkids.

This is actually a great family movie. It is a wonderful story about a boy, who despite, negative peer pressure and a troubled family life, remains positive, virtuous, and driven to achieve his dream. He is providentially rescued by a man who becomes his mentor and a worthy father figure. This true story is full of human drama. HIghly recommend.

Mavericks is a surfing location in Northern California, USA.
It is located approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from shore outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay
at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea.
After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 feet (7.6 m) and top out at over 80 feet (24 m).
The break is caused by an unusually shaped underwater rock formation.
Mavericks is a winter destination for some of the world's best big wave surfers.
Very few riders become big wave surfers.
Only a select few are willing to risk the hazardous, sometimes deadly, conditions at Mavericks.
An invitation-only contest is held there most winters, when the waves come.
Seven years after his historic ride, Jay drowned while free diving in the Maldives.
He was 22 yers old.
It is a really inspirational and thought-provoking docu-drama you would certainly love from the bottom of your heart.
