The Crime The customers in a London convenience store are taken captive. Among them is young mother, Detective Helen Weeks. She is told her life depends on the co-operation of one of her colleagues - detective Tom Thorne.

The Demand Akhtar is desperate to know what really happened to his beloved son, who died a year before in prison. He is convinced the death was not an accident and forces the one man who knows more about the case than any other, Thorne, to re-investigate.

The Twist What Thorne discovers will upend everything he thought he knew about the fate of those he's put away...but will it be enough to fulfill the wishes of a grieving and potentially violent father?

Thorne #10

rb3221 Nov 08, 2016

A very good fast paced story where Thorne needs to solve the murder of a young boy who did not commit suicide. The story has a real urgency based on the fact that it occurs over a three day period. The novel alternates between the hostage taker and his two hostages, the response of the hostage negotiators and Thorn's frantic investigations, while keeping the reader on edge and in suspense much of the time.
As usual Thorne has to cut through red tape and do it his way and potentially take both his life and his career into harms way. I particularly enjoyed the very satisfying and surprising ending especially the part with Helen Weeks as it puts a new perspective into Thorne's life.
A thoroughly very good read, a page turner and one of Billingham's best thus far.

I really enjoyed this page-turner, right to the tissues I needed at the end. Good plot, well-developed, genuine surprises, and very well written.

Billingham did a lot with just one kidnapper and one hostage. Nicely written.

The Demands is the best of the very good Tom Thorne novels. Give it a read. You won't be sorry.
