For those looking for plot, character, action and political commentary this is a better than average film. However there more to see and hear in Peter Weir's masterpiece. The Maurice Jarre's soundtrack is awesome (up his standard with Zhivago & Lawrence of Arabia). The cinemaphotography is world class, especially in night scenes and cramped set spaces. Above all the sparse dialogue in most scenes, allows the camera to communicate through performers body language, silences, faces, and especially the eyes. Peter Weir allows the East actors a place to communicate their viewpoint, plans, responses, etc while the self-inflated Western people talk, e-mote, and struggle to grasp what is about to happen (eg the military will pre-empt the Communist coup by taking over, and kill half a million people to set-up the Suharto dictatorship). The story-telling uses the camera along with limited dialogue to give power to non-verbal sounds of place, while the Eastern actors signal each other with eyes, body language, silence building a subliminal power and expression of place over words. Easy to miss, yet overwhelming once the viewer starts to study this film.

Additionally this movie comes from the era when color film-making reached its zenith of clarity, focus, color values; before our digital-age arrived to over-doctor and rob our modern cinema of truth in pictures. Last night I saw the 2016 film Lucky. It was created using pre-2000 cameras and lenses, which shames much of what we see now.

I saw this when it first came out in '82. It's still a terrific movie: Gibson's star power, Hunt's acting, Weir's direction.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but emersbc's is at odds with that of most people's. Does he or she realize that Linda Hunt won an Oscar for that incredible performance?

No, the film does not totally work but I like what one reviewer said who called it a flawed masterpiece. It's def up there tho. Wish they would release a BD. Tired of waiting; might have to see if I can find it in 35mm. Yes, I can show that.

Cinematography and casting terrific, plot a little thin.

This movie was really bad. First, why was Linda Hunt playing Billy Kwan? It was really distracting and her narration was extremely annoying. Gibson and Weaver were o.k. but the plot was thin, the characters underdeveloped and, well, yawn.

A compelling story with a spectacular acting turn by Hunt together with strong work from Weir, Weaver, Gibson, Jarre et al. Very subtle and stunning wide-angle work by Russell Boyd.
