One spring, a bunch of chicks overhear the “farmer’s wife” say “Sure hope one of them’s a rooster.” Sure enough, one of them is a rooster and pretty soon he’s crowing at dawn and going on about his “gift.” Pfftt! He actually thinks he has the power to make the sun rise. Seriously? This goes on for years until one day he sleeps in and the sun rises anyway. Then Rooster has a total and completely pathetic midlife crisis. Eventually, after much moping around and being unbearable, he regains his spirit and former arrogance with the selfless help of a loyal hen who should dump him already. What? Taken literally, this is a cute story about a fairly stupid bunch of fowl. Taken allegorically, the gendered messages in this book are kind of, no, they are really annoying. The illustrations, however, are glorious.
