Jettison the old rulebooks about home d#65533;cor and "undecorate" your space. As the founder and creative director of DwellStudio--which is famous for its brightly colored, graphic textile designs for home furnishings--designer Christiane Lemieux challenges tradition in a quintessentially American way, championing a fresh, unconventional approach to creating a beautiful and comfortable home. Lemieux emboldens readers to push aside stuffy, professionally-designed d#65533;cor, showing them instead how to infuse their own personality into their home.

Undecorate profiles twenty homes from all over the country, revealing their owners' love of imperfection and penchant for surprise and unusual juxtapositions while inspiring readers to follow their own whimsy and practicalities in their personal spaces. An anglophile creates an English manor in Hollywood, mixing British flea-market finds with midcentury furniture. A car fanatic turns a vintage Airstream trailer into a master bedroom and situates it in the middle of a vast industrial loft in downtown Chicago. A couple transforms a log house in Nashville, Tennessee, by blending their modern and eclectic styles with the home's rustic charm. Though the designs differ widely, the spaces all express an open-minded attitude. Some homes embrace their contexts, while others transcend them. All are shaped by instinct and imagination and share innovative ideas that readers can use to organically and elegantly create their home to match their lifestyle and tastes.

Lemieux gets to the essence of the homeowners' distinctive styles, pinpointing the transformative ideas, thoughtful details, and useful solutions that make each home memorable. With more than 200 full-color photographs, Undecorate will both inspire and guide homeowners to a new outlook on home design.

This was exactly what I was looking for - if you are hip, have eclectic and artistic tastes, then this is a great design book. Lots of quirky homes with great art and ways to live with it. I just wish I could find more of this ilk and style.

In this town, with so many people living in temporary quarters prior to graduating and getting on with real life, this would be very helpful. It gives courage that everything doesn't have to be new and sparkly; that comfort and meaning are more pleasant -- at least for some people. There are several NYC (Brooklyn, specifically) apartments -- notoriously short on space if you've never been -- that have been done quite well, given the constraints.

Certainly not everything in this book was exactly to my tastes, yet I still found a fair amount of inspiration. It is true that I will never have (nor want) as many artfully placed knickknacks in my house, and as with another commenter I found the chapter on collections (it is only one chapter of many) skippable. But what I appreciated is that the homes shown were actually lived in -- in the form pictured in the book. I particularly liked the chapter on living with children. And I took away a fair number of ideas for colour, window treatments, etc. that I am using to redecorate my own house.

I would also like to point out that there's a good list of resources at the back. For example, it led me to a zero VOC, environmentally-friendly (and budget-friendly!) line of paint available here in Vancouver that I hadn't known before.

Most of the content in this book wasn't really my taste. It seemed to showcase eccentric or different types of homes and collections.
