No need for a "spoiler alert" as Roundcat has the plot wrong. Once again, the author, Edward Marston, has more suspects, in this police procedural thriller, than fleas on a dog's back; and is much more satisfying than another 'detective' series set in Botswana.

Naturally, since the man who apparently committed suicide is a friend of Superintendent Tallis and the death occurred on a railway, Inspector Colbeck and Sgt. Leeming are dispatched to prove the death is not suicide--which it isn't as it turns out. Then the problem becomes, who killed him. This becomes more of a village murder case, since the solution involves Inspector Tallis' friends' social connections. As usual things are not what they seem, but Colbeck figures it out in the end.

An enjoyable mystery - a little contrived perhaps but I do like the 'good' characters.

Every time the detectives turn around, they find another guilty person. But they do manage to find the one they are looking for.
