Unfortunately, Roy's first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn't been sinking his thumbs into Roy's temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and here's the odd part, wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy's trail and onto adventure.

Hoot is a story of survival, friendship, and the power of words. Yes, it seems like it is a book for children but there are meaningful messages trapped within this novel and the story of the running boy. Roy is tired of moving from place to place, especially now, when he has to deal with Dana Matherson in Florida. But one day, Dana’s bullying leads Roy to see the running boy outside of the bus, and the mystery begins. Roy’s curiosity grabs the moment and he sets off to find the boy with no shoes, no backpack, and who runs at the speed of light. Now he finds himself wrapped up in a complicated fight for the burrowing owls at the Mother Paula construction site; and finds himself asking what the difference between right and wrong really is in terms of the law. A wonderful and rich story of a typical school boy who uses his strengths to his advantage.
